Sunday 14th January, 2007
This evening the Magnetometer team has arrived. They come from Tokyo as a contribution to the Ertugrul project. Their work will start tomorrow early and they will operate from a different boat than the diving team. Selcuk Kolay, due to his own extensive experience operating and reading magnetometer surveys, will be with them. Originally their survey will be completed in one day and the data they obtain will be added to the 3D seabed map Mr. Hantani and his team provided after the multibeam sonar survey. We’ll get more detailed information tomorrow.
Last night, the Magnetometer team arrived in Kushimoto. They are from Oyo Corporation in Tokyo. They will conduct a survey of the wreck area to see if there are any magnetic anomalies. In other words, their system can find a piece of iron even if it is buried beneath the sea floor. We had a short meeting and discussed the survey area. The magnetometer is pulled by cable from a boat to record magnetic features. This device cannot be used on a shallow and complex seabed because it might hit the bottom or it might be caught between the rocks. Therefore, it was decided that the search area will be off shore from where we are finding the concentration of artifacts. If the vessel hit the reef and broke apart, some of the parts may have been washed out towards the open sea.

Day off
Today is a day off. Some people went to visit a natural park about one hour from Kushimoto. Tufan, Bora, Onur and I stayed in the hotel catching up with other things, while Tufan and Onur, especially, fixed equipment and prepared for tomorrow, which will be their second diving day. The weather is beautifully clear and sunny although very cold.
